A place like no other

Novella Waters has a unique story and singular heritage. A rare and special location, owning a part of it is an opportunity not to be missed.

A story begins

Aged just 19, John Beattie came to Australia in 1857 from Country Tyrone, Ireland.

After a few years in Melbourne, John moved up to Queensland in 1862 where he worked cutting timber at Mt Cotton.

Affable and neighbourly, John was friendly with the local Indigenous people of the area, the Yugambeh people, sharing his dream with them that he would one day own his own farm. Knowing the land better than anyone, they led him from Redland Bay to the Coomera River where they used to have their camp.

This land was up for selection, so John applied and received 247 acres of prime river flats, largely covered in timber. Ploughing was done by bullock with the main crops being potatoes, sugar cane and later dairy.

In 1872, John married Mary, the daughter of the Rev. Harding, the first Methodist minister of the area. They lived in a slab hut with their four boys and five girls until 1896 when a house was built. Horses, then coaches, then the railway came in 1889. A punt, or ferry, was used to cross the river until 1930 when the bridge was built.

John and Mary raised their children on the land. Like many families they lost two sons, Edwin and George, in the First World War. The farm at Coomera was managed by two of John and Mary’s daughters, Caroline and Alice.

John died in 1923. The changes he witnessed to the land he called home were many, but still today, generations of Beattie children continue to live in Coomera.
